1,000-year-old well preserved, ‘rare’ Viking armband found in Sweden | Engineering

An “attentive private person” has made an astonishing discovery in a Swedish wetland: an extremely rare Viking-era arm brace, forged from iron, a deviation from the typical silver and bronze.

On the 11th of March, the Kalmar County Administrative Office shared news of an intriguing find via Facebook; an anonymous local, while exploring a wetland area, had noticed an unusual glint, sparking an archaeological investigation.

Initially mistaken for a rusted bracelet, the object proved to be a rare Viking-era relic found protruding from the Öland wetland.

The low-oxygen conditions of the earth in which it was buried contributed to the exceptional preservation of the open-ended bracelet, which even exceeded researchers’ expectations.
