The Atlantic hurricane season produced a near-normal number of storms compared with recent years, which have seen more frequent activity. However, the storms that did form were exceptionally large and intense.
Three Category Five hurricanes developed this season—the second-highest number in a single year, behind only the super-hyperactive 2005 season.
