Between 26.6°F and 41°F, the chances of precipitation falling as snow or rain are just about equal. Yes, the air temperature varies from just above to just below freezing, but studies have found that humidity and elevation play a crucial part in determining what phase the precipitation falls in. In mountainous regions, 28°F is likely to cause flurries, but on the coast, it might still be raining even if the temperature says it is freezing.
A new study, published in the journal Science Advances, takes this a step further, finding nine different precipitation types in this range. This study will help future weather forecasting capabilities and inform weather models.
