A new tropical troublemaker may be brewing in the Caribbean. Meteorologists are keeping a close eye on a tropical wave, known for now as Invest 98L, that’s been stirring up showers and thunderstorms over the eastern Caribbean Sea.
The system is trucking westward at about 15 to 20 mph, but it’s expected to slow down in the next few days as it reaches the central Caribbean. That’s where conditions look much more favorable for it to organize — and possibly earn a name: Tropical Storm Melissa.
What’s Happening Right Now
According to the National Hurricane Center, the wave is already showing signs of better organization. Ocean temperatures in the Caribbean are still running hot, and wind shear — which can tear storms apart — is expected to stay low for now.
