Britain’s most advanced fighter jet, a $110 million F-35B Lightning II, is likely to be taken apart piece by piece on the tarmac of Thiruvananthapuram International Airport so it can be loaded into a Boeing C-17 Globemaster and returned to the United Kingdom, according to reports by the BBC, India Today Digital and NDTV.
The short-take-off-and-vertical-landing aircraft, normally embarked on the aircraft carrier HMS Prince of Wales, diverted to the southern Indian city on June 14 after encountering rough weather over the Indian Ocean and being unable to rejoin the Royal Navy carrier, the BBC reported.
Since then, the jet has sat under monsoon rains, guarded by a six-member ship’s detachment, while engineers tried unsuccessfully to fix the problem on the ground.
