Inside laptops, computer screens, and televisions, liquid crystal monomers (LCMs) play a crucial role. These compounds can withstand heat, electrical and mechanical stress, while being lightweight and electrically stable. They also make the bright, crisp screens and images people have grown to expect.
With the widespread use of these electronic products, LCMs have been found in air, dust and wastewater across the world. And when a product is at the end of its life, these LCMs end up as a form of electronic waste.
Previous studies have shown that LCMs can be harmful to human and aquatic species, but there were few answers about how these compounds move through aquatic environments and food chains.
