According to Chinese state media, a People’s Liberation Army (PLA) J-16 fighter successfully locked on to and repelled two foreign fighters (possibly F-22 “Raptors”) within China’s Air Defense Identification Zone (ADIZ).
The event supposedly happened during a training exercise last year, and the Chinese pilot, Li Chao, described dramatic close-range maneuvers (even flying upside down just 10–15 meters above one of the US jets) before “locking on” to both targets and escorting them out.
“Locking on” refers to a fighter using their radar or other sensors to achieve a fire-control solution. This is a critical step before a fighter would be able to pull the trigger and fire a missile.
