Clouds are hydrometeors. By definition, they consist of a visible mass of liquid water droplets, ice crystals, or both, suspended in the atmosphere, usually at a certain height above the Earth’s surface, although they can also be in contact with it. They are grouped into four families that are vertically distributed in the troposphere: 1) high clouds, 2) middle, 3) low; and 4) those with vertical development. In these lines we will focus on the high ones, composed entirely of ice crystals.
In the family of high clouds we find three genera: cirrus (Ci), cirrocumulus (Cc), and cirrostratus (Cs). Their official names are in Latin and are written with an initial capital letter (Cirrus, Cirrocumulus, Cirrostratus).
