Corpus Christi engineering department seeks sea gate for storm surge control | Engineering

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas — The city of Corpus Christi’s engineering department presented an item before the Tax Increment Reinvestment Zone two board Tuesday.

They’re looking for approval for a sea gate for the Padre Island canal system. However, that point was tabled by the board. They suggested taking the item before the Island Strategic Action committee first.

The goal is to consider restoring a gate that was once in place to help slow storm surge.

“When Tropical Storm Alberto came last year there was some damage to Padre Island canal system,” said City of Corpus Christi Director of Engineering Jeff Edmonds. “There is interest in restoring some type of mechanism to be able to slow the flow and storm surge of that.”
