Legendary TV presenter Sir David Attenborough is championing a wildlife charity’s appeal for £30 million to buy an upland estate the size of Athens to create a huge nature recovery project.
The Wildlife Trusts and Northumberland Wildlife Trust want to buy the historic Rothbury Estate in upland in Northumberland. They plan to integrate nature recovery with farming, recreation, education and tourism on the estate.
The project would involve natural land management, using European bison in the woods and beaver on the waterways, they said.
In October 2024, the charities were given two years to raise the funds to buy the estate in its entirety – now there is just one year left.
So far, more than £8.6 million has been raised from individual donations ranging from £5 to £5 million.
