I think I’m most optimistic in the spring. When I look at my yard and imagine the bounty of tomatoes, mint, oregano, lemons, figs, pomegranates, and more, I get really excited to dig into the soil.
Around about August, that optimism gives way to reality. Last year, the rats ate many of my tomatoes. I thought it was deer or turkeys, so I didn’t set traps until it was too late. Bummer.
My fig tree looks healthy, but I get maybe one fruit. This year, I’m taking it out of that giant pot and putting it into the ground. Maybe it will do better. I’m hoping the gophers won’t chew through the root basket, like they did with my three cherry trees. Every one of them bit the dust before they got going. Same for my Macintosh apples.
