The Geminids are considered the queen of meteor showers due to their high Zenithal Hourly Rate (ZHR between 120–160 meteors per hour). ZHR is the theoretical maximum number of meteors per hour that could be seen during a meteor shower under dark skies and a clear horizon.

In addition, their speed is moderate, 33.8 km/s, which allows the human eye to capture their light trails much more easily. They receive this name because their radiant is located in the constellation Gemini.
