There are currently more than 10,000 satellites in the Starlink network in orbit, but that number could grow dramatically: SpaceX submitted to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) a plan to deploy up to one million new satellites, this time as orbital data centers for artificial intelligence.
In response to this scenario, a group of astronomers led by Samantha Lawler of the University of Regina in Canada published an analysis in The Conversation warning that if these plans move forward, more satellites than stars will be visible from anywhere in the world for much of the night regardless of the time of year.
