In a field experiment in urban mangroves along Colombia’s Caribbean coast, researchers found that fiddler crabs ingest microplastics while feeding and can fragment some particles within days.
Testing Plastic in a Real Ecosystem
The study focused on Minuca vocator, a common fiddler crab that thrives in mangrove forests heavily affected by human activity. These crabs are known as “ecosystem engineers” because their burrowing and feeding constantly reshape sediments.
