In a new paper, researchers analysed the genomes of more than 1,300 golden retrievers and matched them with detailed behaviour reports provided by owners.
These reports, collected through the long-running Golden Retriever Lifetime Study, describe how each dog responds to everyday situations such as meeting strangers, hearing loud noises, staying home alone, and encountering other dogs.
A Shared Foundation for Emotion
By comparing genetic markers across the dogs, researchers identified 21 regions of DNA tied to traits such as fearfulness, aggression, trainability, touch sensitivity, and energy levels.
