As drought conditions persist in Hawaii, parts of the state are experiencing water shortages and mandatory water use restrictions. According to the U.S. Drought Monitor, roughly 70% of Hawaii is experiencing drought conditions, with Maui in the western part of the state classified as being in severe drought and placed under stage 3 water shortage.
Due to decreased water levels triggered by continuing drought, the Maui County Department of Water Supply (DWS) has issued a Stage 3 water shortage for the Upcountry service areas, which is effective immediately until further notice.
The Upcountry service area covers Makawao, Upper and Lower Kula, Haʻikū, Hāliʻimaile, Pukalani, Kokomo, Kaupakalua, Ulumalu, Keōkea, ʻUlupalakua, and Kanaio. Agricultural water customers are subject to the same water restrictions as other customers.
