In September 2025, the Pentagon shelled out $93 billion, the highest its been since 2008, primarily on expensive food, luxury items and upscale furniture, according to the government watchdog Open The Books.
The non-profit research organization monitors the annual “use-it-or-lose-it” spending frenzy, during which the U.S. military exhausts the remainder of its budget by any means necessary before funding regulations force it to surrender any unspent funds and potentially face budget cuts the following year.
