On April 23, 2023, an unusually intense solar storm hit Earth, surprising scientists and producing auroras visible as far south as Texas, USA. Most puzzling was that two days earlier, the Sun had released a coronal mass ejection (CME) that didn’t appear particularly threatening.

Initial forecasts were reassuring. The solar flare that preceded the CME was weak, and the particle cloud wasn’t especially fast or dense. Everything pointed to a mild geomagnetic storm. However, when it reached Earth, the impact was severe. What went wrong with the predictions?
