What is El Niño?
El Niño is part of a natural climate cycle called the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO). It occurs when surface waters in the central and eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean become warmer than average, in contrast to La Niña, which is characterized by cooler-than-normal waters in the same region. This warming alters atmospheric circulation patterns, changing how heat and moisture move around the globe.
