For those who grew up fascinated by how astronauts manage life’s practicalities in zero gravity, like eating, sleeping, or using the bathroom, the topic of death in space was rarely part of the conversation. But for today’s space agencies, that once-unspoken topic is becoming a logistical and ethical imperative.
When, Not If
Until now, no astronaut has died of natural causes off-Earth. The tragic deaths aboard the Soviet Soyuz 11 mission in 1971 occurred after their capsule depressurized in orbit, but were only discovered upon reentry. All other fatalities in the American space program have happened within Earth’s atmosphere, governed by terrestrial laws and under Earth’s protective gravity and oxygen.
But things are changing. NASA is planning longer missions—ones that go far beyond low-Earth orbit.
