Happy National Comic Book Day! In October 2023 I had a crazy idea: what if I hosted our campus’s first ever Comic Con event? I believe that graphic novels are so important to our children of all ages and many people still don’t believe they count as reading. I’ve had to have conversations for over a decade with parents, teachers and community members about how graphic novels are valid forms of literature that we should be supporting for our students to read for class and/or for pleasure. 

I work at a middle school in a suburban district in Texas and graphic novels, manga and comic books are by far the most popular titles checked out every year from my library. It doesn’t hurt that I have such a robust collection thanks to serving on the Mavericks Graphic Novel…
