It’s not a hello or a wave–it’s a bubble ring! And those rings might be a way that humpback whales are trying to communicate with the humans around them. Researchers from the SETI Institute in California have documented whales blowing bubble rings during friendly encounters with humans and published their findings in a new paper in Marine Mammal Science.
A Fun Communication Tactic
Humans have long been fascinated by whales, watching them from the shore and boats, often snapping pictures and shouting. Whales have been known to approach people and boats.
This new research shows that the whales are likely playfully communicating with the humans they interact with by blowing bubble rings in their direction.
