NOAA’s aircraft has specialized equipment that the Air force’s Hurricane Hunters lack. Their flights during the hurricane season feed data into computer models to improve forecast accuracy. NOAA layoffs could ground some of these hurricane hunter flights.

What’s at Stake for NOAA Now

A thinned staff consisting of flight directors, engineers, scientists and mechanics will be a struggle for NOAA to maintain a 24-hour schedule of flying Gulfstream jet and the aging WP-3 research aircraft, according to Josh Ripp, a laid off flight engineer.
