An example of this type of material is aluminum. Obtaining primary aluminum (from virgin raw materials) requires three main steps: extraction of the mineral rock, bauxite , through open-pit mining in tropical regions. The Bayer process , which involves heating the bauxite with sodium carbonate at high temperatures, produces alumina (aluminum oxide). Elemental aluminum is then separated from the oxide using electrolytic cells with molten cryolite.
