Japan has strongly criticized a close encounter between its military patrol aircraft and a Chinese fighter jet, describing the event as a “serious concern.”
The incident occurred over international waters in the Pacific, where China has been ramping up its naval and air activity.
According to Japan’s defense ministry, the Chinese J-15 fighter jet took off from the aircraft carrier Shandong and flew just around 148 feet (45 meters) away from a Japanese Self-Defense Force (SDF) P-3C patrol aircraft.
The near miss happened over the weekend, and Japan’s chief cabinet secretary, Yoshimasa Hayashi, publicly urged Beijing to prevent similar dangerous encounters in the future.
