In early December, NASA released an image that combines data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Chandra X-ray Observatory to reveal a stunning sight unfolding 120 million light years away. The images combine infrared band data and X-ray data to highlight the intricate details of the unfolding galactic event.
The two spiral galaxies–dubbed NGC 2207 and IC 2163–grazed each other millions of years ago. The stage of the event currently examinable to us unfolded 120 million years ago, to be exact (remember: looking further distances into space is also looking further back in time, due to relativistic effects of the speed of light).
