Cold, west-to-northwest winds are moving across the Great Lakes today, creating an environment favorable for developing lake-effect snow bands. These narrow corridors of heavier snowfall often form quickly and shift with changing wind direction.
Lake-Effect Snow Intensifies Into Tonight
Bands of lake-effect snow will continue to strengthen this afternoon as west to northwest winds pull colder air across the relatively warm lake waters. This setup fuels rising motion over the lakes, allowing snow showers to quickly organize into heavier, more persistent bands. Local snowfall rates of 1–2 inches per hour will remain possible into tonight, especially in Michigan’s snow belts and downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario.
