A team of astronomers has created a laser ablation mass spectrometer to detect microbial life, which vaporises samples of gypsum, allowing their composition to be analysed. This gypsum could have trapped organic compounds in its crystalline structure, making it a key mineral for Astro-biological research.

It is hoped that, with this device, microbial remains preserved on the red planet can be detected and the existence of life can be proven. Tested on Earth, the laser also has great potential for future space missions, as NASA plans to use it in future expeditions to Mars, where rovers will analyse Martian minerals.
