On Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025, just after 10:50AM, two male hikers were struck by lightning near the summit of Humphrey’s Peak, according to the Coconino County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO). Search-and-rescue (SAR) operations commenced around 1PM, which included local SAR volunteers and staff at the nearby Arizona Snowbowl.
The five-mile rescue mission utilized UTV’s for quicker access. The first victim was found around 2:45PM and was able to descend much of the way on their own. The second victim was found about an hour later up at 11,800 feet near the saddle between Humphrey’s and Agassiz. The second victim required a litter carry-out due to the severity of injuries. While air rescue helicopters were initially deployed to help with the search, they were ultimately grounded due to ongoing weather concerns.
