When we think of most flowers, we think of light-loving plants with sprawling colourful petals. When we think of the orchid, we might imagine similar, seeing the waxy, thick leaves and bright petals of orchids for sale in many shops.
We might not think of the strangest orchid of them all – which lives underground in Australia. Not only does it live underground, it blooms underground too.
Rhizanthella gardneri, commonly known as western underground orchid, is a species of flowering plant in the orchid family and is endemic to the southwest of Western Australia. It spends its entire life cycle in the soil without the need for chlorophyll (like most plants).
