Under state law, Minnesota’s power sector must be 100% clean by 2040. To reach this milestone, the state will need firm resources such as nuclear, geothermal, hydropower, or long-duration batteries. So far, the state generates over half of its electricity from wind, solar, nuclear, and other carbon-free sources. Power plants here emit 50% less greenhouse gas than 20 years ago, according to Clean Energy Economy Minnesota. But policymakers, utility leaders, and energy experts say the easiest part of the transition may already be over.
