Since its opening in 1914, the Panama Canal has been a key route for global trade. But its impact goes beyond the transit of ships. Through its waters, more and more species from the Atlantic and Pacific are crossing from one side of the canal to the other , which can dramatically alter the marine and freshwater ecosystems of the region.

This is the warning of a study published last week in Current Biology, which documents the increase in fish migration between the two oceans, a phenomenon driven by the expansion of the canal in 2016.
