NASA is preparing a mission to explore water resources at the lunar south pole. The Polar Resources Ice Mining Experiment-1, PRIME-1, aims to drill into the lunar surface to detect and study the presence of water and other volatile compounds.

The project is key to future manned missions of the Artemis program and to establishing a sustainable human presence on the Moon. Water could be broken down into hydrogen and oxygen, essential elements for both human life and rocket fuel.
