In 2009, researchers at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Research (PIK) in Germany suggested a parameterization of our world’s life support systems. In their published article, they proposed nine geophysical parameters that comprise a sort of life-support system on Earth, along with key thresholds for those parameters. These thresholds describe a safe space within which our species can continue to thrive.
We have tried to identify the Earth-system processes and associated thresholds which, if crossed, could generate unacceptable environmental change.
