At the center of every galaxy is a supermassive black hole, a class of black holes with masses ranging from thousands to billions of times that of the Sun. The elliptical galaxy contains the black hole M87*, with an estimated mass of about 6.5 billion solar masses. M87* has been studied for decades because of a relativistic jet recorded by the Hubble Space Telescope in the early 2000s.

Because of M87*’s size, it became a target for the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) collaboration’s project to photograph a black hole for the first time.
