Nearly half of UK households underestimate how much plastic they throw away each week, according to new research from the Revolution Plastics Institute at the University of Portsmouth.
Online supermarket shopping is creating “plastic blindness” and fuelling the plastic waste crisis because packaging is less visible to consumers. Scientists are urging supermarkets to change infrastructure and systems to stop hiding plastic waste.
A coping strategy
The research analysed three datasets gathered over two years and found on average, households threw away 23 plastic items per person per week – 13 were considered “soft” plastics, like wrappers and film lids, and accounted for around 30% more waste, while 10 were “hard” plastics such as yoghurt pots.
