The latest U.S. Drought Monitor report, issued last Thursday, revealed nearly 85% of Texas is in at least a moderate drought. That is an increase of around 21% compared to the start of 2026. The area in drought has more than tripled since the start of the water year in late September, the 12-month period that meteorologists and hydrologists use to track precipitation and water supply of 2025.
