The branching of trees follows a universal mathematical rule, which applies not only to real trees but also to their depictions in art. Two researchers have found that this pattern is critical for a painted tree to be recognised. When this rule is broken, the depiction becomes open to subjective interpretation.

Fractals, in mathematical terms, are repetitive patterns that resemble each other across different scales. They can be found in nature, such as in ferns, seashells, or certain vegetables like Romanesco.
