The melting of glaciers is the second-largest contributor to global sea-level rise, after ocean warming.

In 2002, glaciers – excluding the continental ice sheets of Greenland and Antarctica – spanned 705,221 sq km and held an estimated 121,728 billion tonnes of ice.

But between 2000 and 2023, they lost an average of 273 billion tonnes of ice each year – equivalent to 30 years’ water consumption by the entire world’s population.

If the loss continues at this rate, we will lose nearly half of glaciers globally by the end of this century, impacting the livelihood of coastal communities and of those relying on glacier meltwater as a source of freshwater.
