Salad on the moon, potatoes on Mars and raspberries in a spaceship. These might seem like scenarios straight out of a science fiction movie, but the possibility of agriculture in space is becoming more and more real every day.
Over the past few decades, scientists have been working tirelessly to develop a way to grow crops in the harsh conditions of space. Now, a team of scientists from across the globe has outlined a roadmap to grow crops on missions to the moon and Mars. The breakthroughs outlined in the new research, published in the journal New Phytologist, show how long-term life in the wide expanse of space might be sustained through growing fresh food.
