Deep-sea exploration is expanding as demand for critical minerals grows. This is because countries are looking at the possibility of mining these minerals from the bottom of the ocean. But the impacts of these ventures are not well known because many questions remain about the ecosystems at the bottom of the sea.
In 2022, a test of a commercial deep-sea mining machine was undertaken on the Pacific’s abyssal plain. Going down to a depth of around 14,000 feet below the ocean’s surface, scientists aimed to understand the impact of the machine and explore one of the least known ecosystems on the planet before and after the machine moved through.
