A new study published in Science Advances identifies a consistent evolutionary pattern associated with that scaling. Across hundreds of ant species, researchers found that larger colonies are linked to reduced investment in each worker’s exoskeleton, known as the cuticle. Lower cuticle investment reduces the resources required to produce individual workers, without altering worker body size.
