Sounds like science fiction? That is exactly what happens with the rockets we launch into space. And now, for the first time, a team of scientists has managed to measure it.
A research group led by the Leibniz Institute of Atmospheric Physics (Germany) has achieved a milestone: detecting and quantifying in real time the pollution left by a rocket reentering the upper atmosphere. The source of this chemical signature was a SpaceX Falcon 9, whose upper stage disintegrated over Central Europe in February 2025.
