Arctic winter sea ice cover reached its lowest level on record, reaching its annual maximum on March 22, 2025 , according to NASA and the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC). It reached 14.33 million square kilometers (5.75 million square miles) that day. The maximum extent was below the previous minimum of 14.41 million square kilometers (5.75 million square miles) in 2017, according to Earth Observatory.

The ice minimum for this 2025 season was the lowest on record, consolidating a dangerously downward trend that now appears to continue in Antarctica as well.
