The stage had been set for a severe weather outbreak in the Northeast on Thursday. A formidable cold front collided with a dome of hot and muggy air that had been building since the weekend. An approaching trough gave the environment the start-up energy required to produce widespread severe weather and subsequent damage.
Locations from far northern Maine to the Philadelphia metro area were impacted by the storms. Nearly 300 reports of wind and hail damage were received from the Finger Lakes region of central New York eastward to Boston and Providence. Over 39 million people were under watches and warnings at some point on Thursday. More than 100,000 residents were left without power.
