From record-setting wildfires to historic hurricanes, this summer’s weather events underscored the accelerating intensity of climate-induced weather events worldwide. Here’s a recap of eight remarkable weather events that defined the summer of 2025.
Hurricane Erin
It was the first major hurricane of the Atlantic season. Intensifying rapidly before September, Erin was one of the fastest-strengthening storms on record.
On August 15, it was a Category 1 hurricane near the Leeward Islands and became Category 5 just 24 hours later.
Erin did not make landfall in the U.S. and stayed at least 200 miles offshore, but its size caused widespread coastal impacts, especially in the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
