It’s the size of Mallorca and has had a breathtaking journey. We’re talking about the world’s largest iceberg, identified as A-23a , which broke off the Filchner-Ronne Ice Shelf almost 40 years ago (in 1986) and remained trapped on the Antarctic seafloor for a long time.
The iceberg is estimated to still have a surface area of about 3,360 square kilometers, roughly equivalent to the area of the island of Mallorca. It weighs almost a trillion tons and has been drifting northward since 2020. Since most of the iceberg lies beneath the water’s surface, its ice extends up to 300 meters into the sea and protrudes up to 100 meters above the water.
Why A-23a?
