Geomagnetic superstorms are rare phenomena: they occur only once every 20 or 25 years , when the Sun releases huge amounts of energy and charged particles that hit the Earth.

On May 10 and 11, 2024, our planet was hit by the strongest event in more than twenty years, dubbed Storm Gannon or Mother’s Day Storm.
Now, a study led by researcher Atsuki Shinbori of Nagoya University’s Space-Earth Environment Research Institute offers the first direct and continuous measurements of how an extreme superstorm can compress and destabilize the plasmasphere , a protective layer of charged particles that surrounds the Earth.
