The Midwest Regional Climate Center designed a metric to capture the difficulty of a winter season. Called the Accumulated Winter Season Severity Index (AWSSI), or simply the winter “misery index,” it translates winter conditions into a measurable score.
It keeps a daily running tally on just how bad, or good, depending on your point of view, the season is going.
That score aligns with five categories: mild, moderate, average, severe, and extreme. It accounts for the intensity and duration of cold weather, the total snowfall, and how long snow lingers on the ground. The scores are updated every day for several cities around the country.
