A new study in Science Advances says that glacier melt is unusual for California’s Sierra Nevada glaciers. These glaciers are rapidly melting, at rates not seen before.
New Glacier Study
The authors described these glaciers as “public-facing emblems of climate change.” The study looked at 4 glaciers in the Sierra Nevada: Conness, Maclure, Lyell and Palisade. These glaciers are good “bellweathers” for looking at glacier disappearance and they have withstood the test of time and industrial-era warming.
The researchers analyzed samples from exposed bedrock, and noticed ice has been around for far longer than originally thought. The glaciers have been around for longer than previously thought; they have been around for the entire Holocene (11,700 years since the last ice age).
